Inside the news. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, senior executives and nine members of the board, along with other shareholders of the company collectively voted against Proposal 7, titled ‘Assessing Allegations of Biased Operations in Meta’s Largest Market.’ This tackled accusations levelled by Facebook over the proliferation of hate speech and its alleged failure to handle risks and political bias. Expressing concern over insufficient content monitoring and a lack of transparency in the platform’s practices, the proposal demanded a review of issues including:-

Alleged political bias of former Facebook employee Ankhi Das and current Meta India Public Policy head Shivnath Thukral, who is said to have assisted BJP in electoral campaigns in 2014.

Eko, a non-profit advocacy organisation that seeks to hold corporations accountable on social issues, had put forth Proposal 7. Meta’s stance is reflective of its opaque operations.

One last thing. Proposal 7 observed that Meta’s algorithms and human moderators’ poor ability to comprehend several languages in India has rendered content moderation ineffective.
