DPDP Act draft rules mandate platforms to delete personal user data after 3 years
E-commerce platforms, social media intermediaries, and online gaming platforms with significant user bases in India will soon be required to erase personal data of users three years after it is no longer needed. This directive is part of the draft rules under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, released for public feedback.
The draft rules apply to:
- E-commerce entities with at least 2 crore registered users in India
- Online gaming intermediaries with not less than 50 lakh registered users.
- Social media intermediaries with at least 2 crore registered users.
These provisions are detailed under Section 8 of the draft rules.
Data fiduciaries, as these entities are referred to, must notify users at least 48 hours before erasing their data. This notification will allow users to request retention of their information, such as profiles, email addresses, and phone numbers if required to access goods, services, or funds.
“At least forty-eight hours before completion of the time period for the erasure of personal data under this rule, the Data Fiduciary shall inform the Data Principal that such personal data shall be erased unless she logs into her user account or otherwise initiates contact with the Data Fiduciary,” the draft rules state.
Daily Listen, podcast hosted by AI chatbots on Google
Google is capturing the items and areas that most interest you and turning them into AI-generated podcasts for your listening pleasure. Now rolling out to iOS and Android users, a new experimental feature called Daily Listen will feature daily podcasts hosted by two AI bots.
How Daily Listen works
To generate the content, Google will use subjects that you search for as well as news stories that appear in your Discover feed.
Summarizing your top topics through AI, each daily podcast will run for about five minutes, according to The Verge. The audio will provide scrubber controls to let you play, pause, mute, go back, or jump ahead to the next story. A text transcript will also appear so you can read the summaries as well.
Google Announces Advanced AI Options for Retailers
Google has announced some new options to help retailers integrate its advancing generative AI tools, which it’s showcasing at the 2025 National Retailers Federation (NRF) Big Show, being held in New York this week.
First off, Google’s looking to make it easier for retailers to utilize AI agents, powered by its gen AI systems, which can help brands boost sales opportunities through guided assistance.
“Retailers can now use AI agents to personalize the customer experience by offering tailored product recommendations, answering questions in real-time and guiding shoppers through the buying process. AI agents can also streamline operations by automating tasks like inventory management, customer service and even loss prevention, allowing employees to focus on higher-value work.”
Google says that retailers can now build their own AI agents via Google Agentspace, a creation platform that helps companies build custom AI bots.
And given the advancing adoption of AI, this could soon become an expectation among shoppers, that they’ll be able to ask questions, and get guidance, almost instantly, via advancing AI tools.
