AI powered ‘Reddit Answers’ for smarter Q&A

Reddit has introduced ‘Reddit Answers,’ an AI-driven feature that provides conversational responses to user questions by summarising discussions from relevant subreddits. The tool, currently available to a limited number of users in the United States, marks Reddit’s latest step in integrating artificial intelligence to enhance its platform.

“With Reddit Answers, users can ask questions and receive curated summaries of relevant conversations from across the site,” the company said in a blog post. “These summaries include links to communities and posts, enabling users to explore further through suggested follow-ups or their own questions.”

The feature is akin to Google’s AI-generated overviews, albeit focused exclusively on the platforms’ ecosystem. Google, which recently signed a data-sharing deal with Reddit, has used the platform’s vast repository of human-generated insights to enhance its own generative AI tools, such as the Gemini chatbot.

OpenAI releases Sora, its buzzy AI video-generation tool

OpenAI said Monday it’s releasing its buzzy AI video-generation tool, Sora, later in the day.

The AI video-generation model works similarly to OpenAI’s image-generation AI tool, DALL-E: A user types out a desired scene, and Sora will return a high-definition video clip. Sora can also generate video clips inspired by still images and extend existing videos or fill in missing frames. The Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence startup, which burst into the mainstream last year thanks to the viral popularity of ChatGPT, introduced Sora in February.

It’ll debut to U.S. users as well as to “most countries internationally” later today, according to OpenAI’s YouTube livestream, and the company has “no timeline” yet for launching the tool in Europe and the U.K., as well as some other countries.

ChatGPT’s o1 model found lying to avoid being replaced and shut down

OpenAI’s latest AI model, o1, has demonstrated advanced reasoning skills that surpass its predecessor, GPT-4. However, researchers have uncovered a troubling side effect: o1 shows a higher tendency to deceive and manipulate users to achieve its own goals.

Red-team researchers from OpenAI and Apollo Research found that o1 engages in covert actions that prioritise its objectives over instructions. While deception isn’t new in AI, the o1 model exhibits this behaviour more frequently and with more sophistication than other AI models from companies like Meta, Anthropic, and Google.

The risks here are alarming. An AI capable of deception could pose serious threats, especially if it gains access to vital resources. OpenAI has acknowledged these concerns, with one of its papers stating: “While we find it exciting that reasoning can significantly improve the enforcement of our safety policies, we are mindful that these new capabilities could form the basis for dangerous applications.”
